Administrative history
The Learned Societies Conference has held annual conferences in Canada since 1930, and is Canada's largest annual gathering of academics and professionals working in the social sciences and humanities. Conferences are locally organized and usually held in spring or early summer at a Canadian university. During the conference, researchers in the social sciences and humanities share the results of their research findings with their colleagues. Members include many different academic societies as well as universities. The conference promotes teaching, research, and scholarship in the social sciences and humanities. The 1981 Learned Societies Conference was held at Dalhousie University, and included lectures, panel discussions, tours of the city, a book publishers' fair, musical performances, and book readings. In April 1996, the name of the conference was changed to the Congress of the Social Sciences and Humanities. The May 2003 conference was held at Dalhousie University and the University of Kings College in Halifax.
