Scott, Rev. Jonathan
Person · 1744-1819

Reverend Jonathan Scott, a minister in the Congregational Church and author, was born on 12 October 1744 in Lunenburg, Massachusetts, United States to John Scott and Lydia Thwing. He was their seventh child. On March 14, 1768 he married Lucy Ring, the daughter of a Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada fisherman and trader. In his early years (1758 - April 1764) he was an apprentice shoemaker to William Goddard of Roxbury, Massachusetts. After his apprenticeship ended he traveled to Yarmouth NS to be with his elder brother Moses, who had settled their the previous year. After a disappointing first visit to Nova Scotia he returned to Roxbury to work for Goddard. However, shortly after returning they split ways and Scott tried to establish his own business in Roxbury, which was unsuccessful. Thus, he returned to Yarmouth NS in April 1765. He was able to make a small salary working as a fisherman, and he started to establish himself in the community. Scott, who had been religious since childhood, started leading public worship in the fall of 1768. By 1770 he was invited to become minister, but refused because of divisions within the church on pro and anti evangelical positions. The invitation was renewed in January of 1772, and this time he accepted, because a visit from Congregational ministers from Massachusetts Solomon Reed and Sylvanus Conant had brought about more unity within the church. He was officially ordained on 28 April 1772 after rigorous examination in Middleboro. Scott was the congregational minister of Yarmouth from May 1772 until 1795, when he left for Bakerstown (Minot, Maine) to become minister there. Scott had a significant role in the great religious revival in Nova Scotia (1770's - 1790's). He became the leading spokesperson for the opposition of Henry Alline in the early 1780's. He was unable to solidify the anti-revivalist cause, which caused him to become a bitter man over the years, and his failure led to his decision to leave Nova Scotia in the mid 1790's. Rev. Jonathan Scott passed away on 15 October 1819 in Minot, Maine.
