The Regional Social Planning Council operated in the 1970s and focused on public and social welfare in the Halifax-Dartmouth area, delivering family-centred services and working to address social needs.

In October 1994 Halifax County Municipality, in partnership with the Cities of Halifax and Dartmouth and the Town of Bedford launched the project to address the future of solid waste management for the four municipalities. Their goal was the development of an overall solid waste management strategy as well as a viable site for a new, second generation landfill with a target operation date of January 1, 1997. The project was created after resolution of council where all municipalities agreed that the Halifax County Municipality would be tasked with developing a new landfill and waste management strategy. The project established a Project Steering Committee of municipal and community representatives as well as two Stakehoder Committees: One that would help find a new location and one that would help with a management strategy. The Project Steering Committee: Sought input from Community Stakeholder Committees (CSCs). Considered and responded to decisions, input, and recommendations from CSCs as required. The Committee consisted of 9 members: 3 County staff, 3 county residents, and 3 each Halifax, Bedford, and Dartmouth. They were responsible for recommending to County council a preferred location for the long-term waste facility as well as developing a regional solid waste management strategy. The Landfill Site Search Community Stakeholder Committee: The Landfill Site Selection Committee advertised call for membership in the newspaper, libraries and other public places to give all citizens from the County, Halifax, Dartmouth and Bedford the opportunity to participate in choosing the landfill site though a public consensus process. The results of the meetings were communicated to the Project Steering Committee who made conclusions known to the County Council. The goal of the Site Selection Committee was to : Provide an open, balanced, inclusive decision and advisory forum for all interested citizens and other stakeholders to proactively collaborate and formulate advice and consensus recommendations regarding the Halifax County Municipality landfill search. Members could join at any time but had to endorse any previous work conducted by the CSC and could not reverse ant decision already made.

The Registered Nurses Association of Nova Scotia (RNANS) is a regulatory body governed by a volunteer board of directors responsible for establishing policies and goals in accordance with current legislation. The first meeting was held in 1909 and the association was incorporated in 1910. It holds as its mission the advancement of the profession: to develop better working conditions, prepare members for changing and increasingly specialized advancements, and standardize training. The establishment in 1909 of nursing examinations was a significant step towards the creation of provincial nursing standards.

Reid, Alexander Peter

Alexander Peter Reid was Dean of Medicine at Dalhousie University in 1868. He was born in London, Ontario, in 1836 and graduated from McGill University in 1858 with his MDCM. He completed post-graduate training at the University of Edinburgh and in 1865 graduated with an MD from the University of New York. He moved to Nova Scotia and was appointed Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Dalhousie University in 1868. In 1875 he was made Dean of the Halifax Medical College and then president in 1887. From 1892-1898 he also served as Superintendent of Victoria General Hospital, before being appointed Nova Scotia's first Provincial Health Officer, a position from which he retired in 1913. He died on 26 February 1920.

Reid, Charles, Captain

Charles Reid was born on 28 December 1853 and lived at Brule, Colchester County, Nova Scotia. Reid married Annabell Urquhart in 1882 and they had six children. He was the builder, owner and captain of the schooner Nellie Reid, which was launched in 1891 and named for his daughter. He captained the vessel on numerous trade voyages to New York and Boston, as well as to numerous Maritime ports. He died on 15 January 1922 at Tatamagouche, N.S.

Dr. John Graham Reid was born in 1948 in Scotland. In 1970, he received his Honours Bachelor of Arts from Oxford University, followed by his Master of Arts from Memorial University of Newfoundland in 1972. In 1975, Reid obtained his Ph.D from the University of New Brunswick, where he began his teaching career that same year. Prior to his arrival to Saint Mary's University at Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1985, he also taught at Saint Thomas University and Mount Allison University. Reid was hired as associate professor of history at Saint Mary's University from 1985 to 1989, at which time he was promoted to the position of professor of history. He has been active in the Saint Mary's community through serving on various committees such as the Faculty of Arts Executive committee (1988-1993); and the Senate sub-committees of Curriculum (1988-1998), Research (1988-1998), and Graduate Studies (1988-1992). Reid was also a member of the Saint Mary's University Archives committee (1987-1991), the Association of Canadian Studies (1989-1990), and was on the Board of Directors for the Gorsebrook Research Institute (1992-1993), during which time he assisted the Institute in the preparation for the 1992 conference on the Halifax Explosion. Dr. John Reid is currently a professor of history at Saint Mary's University.

Reid, Robie Lewis

Robie Lewis Reid was a noted historian and jurist in British Columbia, as well as an avid collector of Canadian history books. He was born in Steam Mill Village, Kings County, on 3 November 1866 and attended Pictou Academy before studying law at Dalhousie University, graduating in 1890. In 1893, he and Frederic William Howay formed the law firm of Howay & Reid in New Westminster, BC. In 1907, he co-founded Bowser, Reid & Wallbridge with William J. Bowser and D.S. Wallbridge. He was a Bencher of the Law Society of British Columbia from 1927-1943 and is credited with founding the British Columbia Historical Quarterly. He died on 6 February 1945.

Dr. William Reid joined the staff of Xavier Junior College in 1953 as Professor of Physics. He served as President of the University College of Cape Breton during 1983-1989.
