Burris Franklyn ‘Bub’ Russell was born December 23, 1928 in Clam Harbour to parents Roy Franklin Russell and Hazel Annetta Lewis. He married Maureen Marie DeBaie on May 15, 1954 at Clam Harbour and they lived there on the original John Russell grant. Together they had four children: Richard, Nancy, Stephen, and Colette.

James Burn Russell was born on 8 April 1892 in Brampton, Ontario. He joined the Canadian Navy in 1917; the Canadian Navy List for January 1918 (corrected to 20 December 1917) records a 4th Class W/T Operator named James Burn Russell, Royal Naval Canadian Volunteer Reserve (RNCVR). The same list records him as the most junior of the three wireless operators aboard the RCN's Auxiliary Patrol Ship Cartier; he joined the ship on 5 August 1917. At the time of the explosion this ship was located off HMC Dockyard Pier 3. Russell was working on a ship in the harbour and was assigned to help look for survivors in the water. He graduated from the University of Toronto in 1921 with a BA and married Edith Scott on 11 September 1923 in Seaforth, Ontario. Thereafter, he worked as an actuary, first for the Travelers Insurance Co. in Hartford, Connecticut and then for the Peoria Insurance Co. He died on 9 September 1933 in Peoria, Illinois and was buried in Seaforth, Ontario.

Thomas “Wallace” Murray Russell was born September 20, 1884. His parents were William Russell and Caroline Elizabeth Parker. He was a fisherman and boat builder in Clam Harbour and married Jane “Janie” Eisan on December 28, 1927. They had two daughters, Carrie Elizabeth, who was born and died in February of 1933, and Daisy Adelaide Marina. Wallace died February 6, 1983.

Verna (Mildred) Keddy, the daughter of Margaret Caroline (Daurey) and George Duff Keddy, was born at Clearland, Lunenburg County in 1899. In 1920, she emigrated to the United States, living in Massachusetts, where, for a time, she worked as a seamstress in a clothing factory. She also worked in Russo’s candy store in Malden, Massachusetts, where she met John Russo (c.1897-1967), whom she married c. 1928. Verna Russo died at Stoneham, Massachusetts in 1993.

Rusted, Nigel

Nigel Francis Scott Rusted (C.M., O.N.L., M.D.C.M., D.Sc., F.R.S.C) was born on July 1, 1907, in Salvage Newfoundland, to Ernest E. Rusted, and Mrs. Rusted. After growing up in Upper Island Cove and Carbonear, he attended high school at St. Peters High School in St. John’s. His early college years were spent at Bishop Fields College and Memorial College, graduating with a Diploma in Arts and Sciences, in 1927, the first graduating class from Memorial.. Nigel’s next move was to Dalhousie University where his graduated with a B.Sc. in 1927 followed by studying medicine, graduating in 1933. Dr. Rusted married Florence Anderson in 1934 and had three children. Florence passed away in 2007, after 63 years of marriage. Nigel Rusted died March, 19th, 2012, aged 104.
Nigel Rusted practiced as a physician and surgeon until he was 75 years old, and retired from general practice in 1987, at the age of 80. He was a respected reconstructive surgeon and spent many a year traveling to out ports in service to his patients. Dr. Rusted kept detailed diaries of his practice from 1925 onward.
Among his many awards, Nigel was bestowed with the Order of Canada in 2011, and the Order on Newfoundland and Labrador in 2007, for his contribution in the field of medicine.

Rutherford, John and Robert

John Rutherford was manager of the Albion Mines in Pictou County, and Inspector of Mines for the province on Nova Scotia in the 1860s. He was replaced by Henry Skeffington Poole, so he could become General Manager and Mining Engineer for the General Mining Association in 1872. He dealt with Albion Mines, Blight Area, Caledonia Coal Mines, and especially, the Style Mining Area. He became a shareholder of this property as well as sole owner of an adjacent property referred to as “John Rutherford”. These properties were also called “Cumberland Coal Areas”. From the late 1890s through to after his death in the 1920s, Rutherford sold options to various buyers on the Styles Mining Company, but his true desire was to sell all of the land to a worthy buyer.

Robert Rutherford, John’s only surviving son (George Rutherford had died in 1903), was left in charge of his estate after John's death in 1913. He also pursued the sale of the Cumberland Coal Areas long after his father’s passing. With the help of other family members and surviving shareholders, Robert followed leads for a sale of the property. Up until 1932, where the textual records leave off, there is still a rental agreement for the properties.

Ryan, James W. (family)

James W. Ryan was a Kentville, N.S. merchant who operated a dry goods store known as 'White Hall.' He was born at Canard, Kings County, N.S. on 30 August 1846. He also served as a town councillor and later mayor of Kentville; 1894-1895 and 1913-1914. James was a lieutenant-colonel and commander of the Kings Canadian Hussars. He married Mary Josephine Rafuse and they had four sons, Walter, Robert, Garnet and Winfield and one daughter, Eva Josephine. James died on 21 December 1922 and Mary died on 4 July 1915.

Their son Robert Holden Ryan was also given the rank of lieutenant-colonel in the Canadian Militia. At the outbreak of the South African War he served as a non-commissioned officer with the Kings Canadian Hussars. He served overseas with the Canadian Mounted Rifles. During the Russo-Japanese War he served in Japan as a British attaché. During the First World War he commanded the 6th Canadian Mounted Rifles. Robert drowned near his home in Schenectady, N.Y. on 19 September 1934.

Eva Ryan married James Balch of Kentville.

Walter D'Arcy Ryan was born on 17 April 1870. He was educated at Kentville Academy, Progessor Currey's School, St. Mary's College, Memramcook College and the Royal School of Calvary. As a young man he was closely involved with the local militia. He became a commercial engineer and specialized in illumination and light distribution. His work was based at the Illuminating Engineering Laboratory, of which he was director, of the General Electric Company. He also lectured at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He married Katherine (Haskins) and their children were Robert, Virginia, Caroline and Marion. Walter died at Schenectady, N.Y. on 14 March 1934.
