Hortense Violet Bessie Spurr was born in 1886 at Melvern Square, Annapolis County, Nova Scotia, the daughter of Lt. Col. Shippy and Elizabeth Spurr. She married Frederick Courtney Gilliatt (1888-1938) on 19 June 1919 at Melvern Square. The couple lived in Annapolis Royal and had two children, Hortense Marie and Courtney. Hortense was the correspondent for the Halifax Herald and for the Annapolis Spectator. She was also active in a wide variety of public activities including being the long-time secretary for the Historical Association of Annapolis Royal. Gilliat died in 1975.

Gilliatt, Courtney, 1921-

Courtney Gilliatt was born at Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia 19 August 1921, the son of Hortense and Frederick Courtney Gilliatt. Gilliatt graduated from Nova Scotia Agricultural College in 1941 winning both the Governor-General's medal and the MacDonald College Scholarship. Later that year, Gilliatt enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force to serve as a flying instructor and became Squadron Commander in the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan. He was then posted to operational flying with a Royal Air Force squadron in England and France, for which he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. After the war, Gilliatt entered MacDonald College at McGill University. He graduated with a B.Sc (Agr) in 1947, then returned to the Royal Canadian Air Force. On 1 May 1948, Gilliatt married Helen Edwards and they had three children. After 35 years of service, Gilliatt retired from the military in 1976 with the rank of Brigadier General. In 1978, he graduated from Carleton University with a masters degree in International Affairs. Gilliatt worked for a small management firm in Ottawa until his retirement in 1982.

Eisenhauer, Ruth, 1909-1997

Ruth Eisenhauer was born at Boston, Massachusetts on 13 November 1909, the daughter of Harold Lenworth and Florence Hickey Eisenhauer. Ruth's father died when she was twelve and she, her mother and brother David moved in with her mother's parents, Rev. David and Annie Hickey. Ruth attended school in Sackville, New Brunswick, Boston, Truro, Nova Scotia, the Browne Arts School in Provincetown Mass. and graduated from Mount Allison University in 1932. After graduating she worked as a salesperson and inspector in the Craft Department of the O.H. Dugan Leather Company in Boston. During World War II she worked as a draftsperson with the Clark Ruse Aircraft Company of Dartmouth and the Victory Aircraft Company in Toronto. From 1945-1954 she worked in the Department of Handcraft and Home Industry for the Province of Nova Scotia as a travelling crafts teacher. Thereafter she established the Handcraft Center at the Educational Training Center at H.M.C.S. Cornwallis and worked there until she retired in 1979. Eisenhauer resided in Dartmouth and eventually inherited the family home in Barrington, N.S. In 1963 she purchased a home in Annapolis Royal and lived in it with her mother, who died circa 1979. Eisenhauer was active throughout her life in promoting arts and crafts activities and was a member of the Arts and Craft League of Nova Scotia. She was dedicated to promoting and preserving the history of Annapolis Royal and was a founding member of the Historic Restoration Society of Annapolis County. Eisenhauer died in the summer of 1997.

Eaton, Harry, 1879-1952

Harry Eaton was born 9 September 1879, the son of Stephen and Anne Roney Eaton. He was the lighthouse keeper at Granville Center, Annapolis County, N.S. and wharfinger for 22 years. He was a member of the Seymour Division, Sons of Temperance. Eaton never married and died 4 November 1952.

A. Boyd Crowe of Annapolis Royal, Annapolis County, Nova Scotia was in the first dental class to graduate from Dalhousie University, Halifax, N.S. Following his graduation, he returned to Annapolis Royal to begin his practice. His office was located in the family home on the corner of Victoria and St. Anthony streets until a fire in 1921. Thereafter he built a home at 34 School Street. Crowe was a long time member of the local school board and involved in numerous public activities. He married Nell McDormand and had two children, Bruce and Cornelia.

Graves, J. Wallace

James Wallace Graves was born 25 November 1825, the son of Elias and Annie. He established a general store at Kingston Village, Nova Scotia, circa 1855. On 6 January 1866, Graves married Almira Jane Patterson at Aylesford, N.S. Their first child, Almira, was born 17 November 1866, also in Aylesford. In addition to running his general store, Graves served as Inspector of Roads in 1890. His general store remained in business until circa 1899. J. Wallace Graves died in December 1914 at age 89.

The Yates Photographic Studio was founded at Annapolis Royal, Annapolis County, Nova Scotia circa 1906 by Paul Yates. Yates was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1863. He began working in the U.S. as a commercial photographer. During this period he married Dorothy Sailer, a widow, who had one son, William. The couple had one son together, Paul Yates Jr. In 1908 Yates began a studio in Digby, called 'The Little Art Gallery.' He continued to operate both studios until the Annapolis shop was destroyed by fire in March 1921. Then he continued to work in the Digby studio, which provided a variety of services. Yates took portraits on location and at the studio, scenic photos and he offered the use of the studio dark room to amateurs. He also offered free instruction. For a time the studio also served as a shop for sheet music, instruments and music books. Yates was closely involved in the music community of the area. Yates' photographs were sold through local hotels in the form of post cards. The Studio employed several assistants. They included Edna McMorgan, Edith James, Jeannette Yates, Gordon Mounty, Eldred Thibbidao and William Sailer. Yates' wife Dorothy died in the 1920s and in remarried Jeannette W. Van Tasselll, who had been an assistant in the Digby studio. Yates died in 1946 and his wife Jeannette continued to operate the studio until circa 1968 and she closed to Digby studio.

Whitman, Louis, 1872-1953

Louis Whitman was born 27 August 1872. He married Florence A. Snider and they had two children, Margaret Frances and Kaherine Hazel. Whitman was a civil engineer and lived in numerous places including Sault St. Marie and Torono Ont. Whitman was the manager of the Annapolis branch of Collas, Whitman & Co. He died in 1953 at Toronto.

Mills Motors was owned and operated by F. Stewart Mills out of the former Farmer's Hotel / Sinclair Inn building in Annapolis Royal, Annapolis County, Nova Scotia. Mills Motors sold cars and was the local dealer for the Ford Motor Company. Mills Motors also sold Irving Oil and Gas products, Dominion tires, and tubes, ran a tax service, supplied hardwood, did work on dykes in the area, collected and sold bottles, as well as a variety of other activities.
