Grew up in Connecticut and Yarmouth, married Annie Grace MacAlpine, daughter of local shipbuilder Kenneth and Grace (McGill) MacAlpine.

A watchmaker by trade, Fred McQuhae was also the most active professional photographer in the town of Shelburne during the late Victorian period.
