Biographical history

Alexander Lawson was born in Scotland on 15 January 1815. He emigrated to Pictou County, N.S. in 1820 with his family and eventually made his way to Yarmouth, where in 1833, he edited the first edition of the Yarmouth Herald. Except for six years in the 1850s, Lawson's name remained on the masthead until his death in 1895. He was also the manager of the Yarmouth Office of the Western Union Telegraph Company, a position from which he resigned in 1883. Upon Lawson's death, the Yarmouth Herald was taken over by his son John Murray Lawson.
