Biographical history

Rev. Dr. Arthur Crawley Chute (10 April 1853 – 29 Sept 1935) was born in Digby, Nova Scotia, the third son of Rev. Obed. Chute (1814-1894) and Mary Jane (Cox) Chute (1824-1904). In 1885, he married the daughter of Rev. A.S. Hunt , Ella Maud Hunt (10 February 1855-28 April 1934). They had four children, Catherine J., Arthur H., Austin A., and Marjorie P. Arthur H. and Austin each received a B.A. from Acadia (’10 and ’12, respectively) and went on to enlist in the First World War. In 1929, Arthur H. was killed in an airplane accident.
Rev. A.C. Chute was a Baptist minister, author , and professor at Acadia University. Chute studied at the Upper Stewiacke School before enrolling at Horton Academy and Acadia College, receiving a B.A. in 1881. He then pursued theology in America, studying at Morgan Park, Newton and the Divinity School of University of Chicago, resulting in a B.D. from Morgan Park in 1884. He was awarded an honorary D.D. from Acadia in 1901 and served as a Senator from 1894-1901.
Chute served as the pastor for Stillman Valley, IL (1884-1889), First Baptist Church, Austin, IL (1889-1892) and First Church, Halifax, NS (1892-1901).
In 1902, he became the G.P. Payzant Professor of Hebrew Language and Biblical Literature at Acadia University, and Dean of Theological Department from 1910-1921. Upon his retirement in 1922, he became the G.P. Payzant Professor of Old Testament Language and Literature, Emeritus.
While at Acadia, Chute authored the Records of the graduates of Acadia university, 1843-1926 (1926) as well as completing work on The religious life of Acadia (1933) with W.B. Boggs. He also contributed regularly to religious newspapers, such as the Maritime Baptist.
In 1935, Chute died in Wolfville, and is buried with his wife in the Willowbank Cemetery.
