History
In 2001, a team of interdisciplinary researchers from several universities in Atlantic Canada, headed by Dr. Terry Murphy from Saint Mary's University, started working on a proposal to create an Atlantic Metropolis Centre to study issues of cultural diversity in the Atlantic provinces. This proposal was awarded SSHRC funding in 2003, and later in 2004 the Atlantic Metropolis Centre joined Phase2 of the national Metropolis project. Funding was renewed for Phase 3 in 2008. The project came to completion in 2012.
Metropolis is an international network for comparative research and public policy development on migration, diversity, and immigrant integration in cities in Canada and around the world. The Canadian Metropolis Project began in 1995 as a partnership between Citizenship and Immigration Canada and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) in order to research public policy development on immigrant integration in cities in Canada. Research was conducted through five regional centres across Canada until 2012, when the project ended. Citizenship and Immigration Canada transferred the Metropolis Secretariat to Carleton University in May, 2012.
Saint Mary's faculty involved in the Atlantic Metropolis Centre were Dr. Terry Murphy (Project Chair, Board of Directors); Dr. Madine VanderPlaat (Project Director; Sociology); Dr. Ather Akbari (Economic and Labour Market Integration); and Dr. Alexandra Z. Dobrowolsky and Dr. Evangelia Tastsoglou (Gender, Migration and Diversity/ Immigrant Women).
