Biographical history

Bruce Curtis, the son of Jim and Alice Curtis, was a student at King's-Edgehill School who graduated in 1982. As a graduation present he went to visit a friend, Scott Franz, in Loch Arbour, New Jersey. On the morning of 5 July 1982 Franz murdered his stepfather, Alf Podgis, and Curtis shot and killed Franz' mother, Rosemary. Curtis was sentenced to 20 years in prison for aggravated manslaughter. Curtis was transferred from a prison in Bordentown, New Jersey, to Springhill, Nova Scotia in 1988, and later moved to a prison in Kingston, Ontario. In 1989 Curtis was able to get day parole and enrolled as a first-year physics student at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario. The Bruce Curtis story was turned into a made-for-TV movie in 1990 entitled Journey into Darkness.
