History
The Helicopter Anti-submarine Squadron 50, or HS 50, was commissioned at H.M.C.S. Shearwater in 1954. It was initially an experimental squadron dedicated to devising tactics for and evaluating airborne dunking sonar. The squadron initially flew H04S-3, Sikorsky "Horse" helicopters. By the early 1960s the squadron had made the transition to Sea King helicopters. The HS 50 embarked on the H.M.C.S. Bonaventure for several cruises. The squadron also had fire-fighting and rescue duties in Nova Scotia. HS 50 was disbanded in 1974.
