Nehemiah Larkin was born in 1858 in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. He began his maritime career with the A. F. Stoneham and Company, on trading vessels running between Yarmouth and West Indies. He worked as a boatswain and mate aboard several vessels including Tsernogora, Templar, Regina, Antwerp, and M.E. Coirpel. For thirty years before his retirement, Captain Larkin was master of the lightship Lurcher. He died in 1944 at Yarmouth.
