Biographical history
Charles Russell Fulton (1896-1924) was the first Halifax police officer to be killed on duty. He was shot by gang leader Lewis Bevis during the investigation of an armed robbery. He had been a police officer for four years and had been married to Ada Pearl Hartling for three years. His widow was responsible for forming this collection.
Custodial history
John Townsend of Schooner Books purchased the collection from the estate of Ada Pearl Fulton Mason, Charles Fulton's widow. He donated it to the HRM Archives on June 16, 2006.
Scope and content
Collection consists of items relating to Charles Fulton's personal life, service as a police officer, and death. The majority of the records relate to his funeral. The collection consists of series: Police service records (contains photographs of Fulton's grave and of other officers, newspaper clippings related to Fulton's death, and letters to his widow from the police service) and Family records (contains letters to the widow, scrapbooks, and family photographs).
