John Chase was born in Cornwallis. He was a student at Horton Academy and graduate of Waterville College, Maine, now Colby University in 1839.
His obituary in The Baptist Year Book of 1880 indicates that he “enjoyed the ministrations of the Rev. Edward Manning, which were largely instrumental in his conversion, during the revival which took place in Cornwallis and Annapolis Valley during the years 1828-29. He soon entered on the work of preaching the Gospel, and spent several years in acceptable service as a Licentiate. He was ordained at Billtown, July 1st, 1835.” (79) He was pastor of the Baptist Church at Bridgetown, N.S. between 1839 and 1850.
His obituary in 1880 notes that he was appointed as Financial Agent to the Nova Scotia Education Society, “and threw himself into the work of liquidating an embarrassing debt which lay as a heavy burden of the denomination.” (79) Rev. Chase travelled with Dr. Isaac Chipman in the summer of 1847, acting as a financial agent for the College, and “in visiting different communities on this tour these two men conducted religious services from place to place, one or the other always preaching a sermon.” Afterwards he moved to Wolfville to become a professor at Acadia and to “devote himself exclusively to this branch of our educational enterprise.” (Chute introduction, file 1928.001/1)
“He died at Wolfville on the 13th November, 1879, leaving an afflicted widow and children.” His daughter was Mrs. Sawyer, wife Acadia’s President Sawyer. “His remains lie in the burying ground at Canard.” (The Baptist Year Book of the Maritime Provinces of Canada, 1880, 79)
