              The fonds consists of records accumulated by Annabel (Siteman) Ells during the course of her research on the area of Ship Harbour and the families who lived there as well as personal records created and accumulated throughout her lifetime. The fonds includes a wide variety of records such as land related documents, wills, Loyalist petitions, census information, court papers, church registers and vital statistics including marriage, birth, and death records; school papers, genealogies, clippings and notes taken from various newspapers and periodicals, photographs and negatives, correspondence, postcards, and diaries.               Fonds consists of records of the Chezzetcook Historical Society and its members. Textual records were created between about 1900- 1930, 1950- 1955, 1965, and 1974- 2008, but the majority date to between 1974 and 2004. Fonds includes research material, genealogical information, publications, society records regarding its operation, inventories, maps, and photographs. Accession number 2009.018.

              Series forms part of the Eastern Shore District High School fonds and consists of essays written by students pertaining to the history of various churches and cemeteries along the Eastern Shore. Series includes information pertaining to St. Anselm’s cemetery and Christ Church Cemetery in Chezzetcook, Clam Harbour Graveyard, the history of St. Paul’s Church in Mushaboom, St. George’s Cemetery and Ostrea Lake Anglican Church, the East Petpeswick Catholic graveyard, St. Mark’s Church in Porters Lake, and St. James Cemetery in Upper Lakeville. Some cemetery papers include lists of those who are buried there, family background information such as origin of names, lists of how many people died in given years, and hand drawn maps.

              Series forms part of the Chezzetcook Historical Society fonds and consists of records relating to activities and events which the Society and its members organized or participated in, including public displays of historical artifacts, society parties, the dedication of a local war memorial, and the Chezzetcook Acadian celebrations of 2004. Series contains guest books, photographs of events, programs, brochures, correspondence, notes, an article, a newsletter, a videocassette, and other material. Series also contains entries in two competitions organized by the society for local grade six and seven students; one for a design for the Society’s seal and one for a 500-word essay on a local historical topic. In addition, series includes correspondence, clippings and other material related to society members’ involvement in an early 1980s movement to prevent the government from running Highway 107 through the Chezzetcook Marshes.

              Series forms part of the Eastern Shore District High School fonds and consists of essays written by students pertaining to the history of different areas along the Eastern Shore. Areas included are Bayers Settlement, Chezzetcook, Clam Harbour, Gaetz Brook, Jeddore, Lake Charlotte, Upper Lakeville, Lake Echo, Little Harbour, Musquodoboit Harbour, Ostrea Lake, Petpeswick, Porters Lake, and Ship Harbour. The essays feature topics such as occupations, industries, sports, electricity, tools, education, transportation, census information, the early mail run, the general history of the area and its inhabitants as well as changes that have occurred over the years. Included in the series is the draft of the publication, The Shore Thing, which was a compilation of selected essays from the grade ten local history projects in 1974 to 1975. In addition to the essays, the publication contains jokes, recipes, puzzles and stories. There is also a photocopied picture of ice houses in Lake Banook and a photocopied article about the vessel, Fleur de Lis.

              Series forms part of the Chezzetcook Historical Society fonds and consists of records relating to research undertaken by Society members on topics such the history of local towns, institutions, and businesses (e.g. schools, churches, hotels, telephone companies); activities (e.g. gold mining, road and bridge-building), Acadian history, notable events (e.g. shipwrecks), and folklore. Series contains notes, essays, lecture and speech notes, interview notes and transcripts, copies and transcripts of historical documents (e.g. registers, legal documents, correspondence, deeds), articles and other publications, clippings, term papers, copies of personal scrapbooks, correspondence, and other material. Series also contains questionnaire forms, notes and a brief, handwritten report relating to a survey undertaken in 1975 by Society members in order to identify sources of historical information among the local populace; folklore, and historical artifacts. Also included are some original documents such as a notebook containing a record of government-funded research experiments conducted between 1950 and 1955 at the Chezzetcook Harbour government reserve clam flats; a handwritten document describing how to tan and dye sheepskin, and an annotated copy of the Education Act revised to 1930 which once belonged to the Seaforth School.

              The first three series of the fonds consist of essays and research written and compiled by Mr. Patrick Milligan and Mr. D. Engram’s grade ten students at Eastern Shore District High School between 1973 and 1980 as part of a class project on local history. The essays include information about various aspects of the history of the Eastern Shore such as industries and occupations, activities, cemeteries, churches, individuals, houses, education, and family and community history. Selected essays from Mr. Milligan’s local history course, 1974-1975, were compiled into a school publication called The Shore Thing, a preliminary copy of which is included in the fonds. The purpose of the book was to introduce students to their own area and familiarize them with the history of local communities along the Eastern Shore. It was placed in the school library for the benefit of all students. The fonds also consists of yearbooks and a newspaper published by the school during the first ten years of its operation.               This audio file is an excerpt from an interview with John Lapierre of Grand Desert conducted in August of 1980 by Lena Ferguson and Rosemary Eaton. The audio clip features Mr. Lapierre discussing his experience working on the schooner, the Village Leaf, as a young boy of fourteen. They sailed from the Chezzetcook area to the fishing grounds off the Magdalen Islands. 2019.014
