              Series forms part of the Eastern Shore District High School fonds and consists of essays written by students pertaining to the history of different areas along the Eastern Shore. Areas included are Bayers Settlement, Chezzetcook, Clam Harbour, Gaetz Brook, Jeddore, Lake Charlotte, Upper Lakeville, Lake Echo, Little Harbour, Musquodoboit Harbour, Ostrea Lake, Petpeswick, Porters Lake, and Ship Harbour. The essays feature topics such as occupations, industries, sports, electricity, tools, education, transportation, census information, the early mail run, the general history of the area and its inhabitants as well as changes that have occurred over the years. Included in the series is the draft of the publication, The Shore Thing, which was a compilation of selected essays from the grade ten local history projects in 1974 to 1975. In addition to the essays, the publication contains jokes, recipes, puzzles and stories. There is also a photocopied picture of ice houses in Lake Banook and a photocopied article about the vessel, Fleur de Lis.

              Series forms part of the Eastern Shore District High School fonds and consists of essays written by students pertaining to the history of various churches and cemeteries along the Eastern Shore. Series includes information pertaining to St. Anselm’s cemetery and Christ Church Cemetery in Chezzetcook, Clam Harbour Graveyard, the history of St. Paul’s Church in Mushaboom, St. George’s Cemetery and Ostrea Lake Anglican Church, the East Petpeswick Catholic graveyard, St. Mark’s Church in Porters Lake, and St. James Cemetery in Upper Lakeville. Some cemetery papers include lists of those who are buried there, family background information such as origin of names, lists of how many people died in given years, and hand drawn maps.

              The first three series of the fonds consist of essays and research written and compiled by Mr. Patrick Milligan and Mr. D. Engram’s grade ten students at Eastern Shore District High School between 1973 and 1980 as part of a class project on local history. The essays include information about various aspects of the history of the Eastern Shore such as industries and occupations, activities, cemeteries, churches, individuals, houses, education, and family and community history. Selected essays from Mr. Milligan’s local history course, 1974-1975, were compiled into a school publication called The Shore Thing, a preliminary copy of which is included in the fonds. The purpose of the book was to introduce students to their own area and familiarize them with the history of local communities along the Eastern Shore. It was placed in the school library for the benefit of all students. The fonds also consists of yearbooks and a newspaper published by the school during the first ten years of its operation.               Fonds consists of approximately 137 hours of oral history interviews conducted by Lena Ferguson. Most interviewees were residents of the Eastern Shore region of Halifax County, particularly the Chezzetcook area. Interview topics include genealogy, local industries, occupations, music, shipping, community life, traditions, and folklore. In addition to interviews, the creator recorded school reunions, concerts, weddings, and church anniversaries. Several paper transcripts are included as well as scrapbooks featuring articles written by Lena and other newspaper articles regarding the Chezzetcook area. 2019.014

              This audio file is an excerpt from an interview with John Lapierre of Grand Desert conducted in August of 1980 by Lena Ferguson and Rosemary Eaton. The audio clip features Mr. Lapierre discussing his experience working on the schooner, the Village Leaf, as a young boy of fourteen. They sailed from the Chezzetcook area to the fishing grounds off the Magdalen Islands. 2019.014

              Series forms part of the Annabel (Sitman) Ells fonds and consists of several maps, the majority of which were produced by the Department of Mines and Resources between 1935 and 1948 and include the areas of Yarmouth, Shelburne, Queens, and Annapolis counties, Tangier, Upper Musquodoboit, Ship Harbour, Guysborough County, Ecum Secum, Moncton, Cape Breton, Owl’s Head, Port Dufferin, River John, New Glasgow, Halifax. Series also includes highway and tourist maps of Nova Scotia, the Maritimes, Halifax and Dartmouth from c. 1948-1965 as well as street guides of Halifax and Dartmouth c. 1955-1965. Also included are Department of National Defence topographical maps of Chezzetcook, Musquodoboit, Halifax, and Sambro from 1939 and 1943. Accession number: 2013.066

              The fonds consists of records accumulated by Annabel (Siteman) Ells during the course of her research on the area of Ship Harbour and the families who lived there as well as personal records created and accumulated throughout her lifetime. The fonds includes a wide variety of records such as land related documents, wills, Loyalist petitions, census information, court papers, church registers and vital statistics including marriage, birth, and death records; school papers, genealogies, clippings and notes taken from various newspapers and periodicals, photographs and negatives, correspondence, postcards, and diaries.
