              Series forms part of the Grace (Williams) Forsythe fonds and consists of photographs and copies of photographs of people, buildings, and scenes along the Eastern Shore. Included are photographs of Salmon River Bridge in the 1930s and 1960s, Byron Myers’ store and post office and Nat Dooks’ store at Head of Jeddore, fish stores owned by Mr. Jim and Captain Will Harpell (grandfather of Grace), the ship Hans Leonhardt which was on her maiden voyage from Germany to Jeddore in September of 1938 and in port during the Czecho-Slovakian crisis, HMCS Sackville in 1944, Jeddore Harbour in winter, several photographs of unidentified people, the United Church at Head of Jeddore, St. George’s Church in Ostrea Lake, the Baptist Church in Oyster Pond, and Reverend Robert Jamieson. Also included are copies of a photograph of Harpell’s Cove showing the home of Jeremiah and Emma Harpell c. 1920, a general view of West Jeddore, and several postcards featuring scenes of Ostrea Lake and Jeddore as well as two negatives including one of Ostrea Lake School, and a clipped picture of the T.S.S.               Subseries consists of correspondence from the United Church of Canada Board of Religious Education as well as pamphlets for religious gifts and calendars, a brochure, and a pamphlet containing plans for Sunday School workers leading up to Easter.

              Series forms part of the Laura F. Stoddard family fonds and consists of a blank pledge card for a Members Associate Pledge likely for the Christian Endeavour Society as well as a certificate stating that William E. Stoddard enlisted in the White Ribbon Army of the N.S.S.S. Association in 1902 at the Sabbath School of the Union Church in Owl’s Head and pledged to abstain from alcohol, tobacco, and profanity. There is also a certificate presented to Robert Burns Williams by the Presbyterian Church of Canada for the memorizing of scripture in 1914 and one presented to Florence Etta Stoddard for reciting the catechism in 1907. Series also includes the communion roll of the Presbyterian Church at Clam Harbour which lists the names of both male and female voters, a pamphlet on the method of taking the vote on church union, and a number of used voter ballots from the vote on church union. There is also one bulletin from the First Baptist Church in Chanston Illinois which mentions a Miss Helen Fisher who attended the Nova Scotia Provincial Normal College. Accession number: 2013.010

              Series forms part of the Annabel (Siteman) Ells fonds and consists of correspondence regarding the establishment of a school at Ship Harbour, school trustee documents, school returns and registers for Ship Harbour school. Also includes correspondence from Clam Harbour school section, a memorial of the inhabitants of Egmont Harbour, Jeddore regarding the establishment of a school and church and aid to support a teacher. Also consists of school papers from Pictou County, particularly Toney River, and other school records gathered by Annabel Ells during the course of her research. In addition, series includes original high school certificates, teacher’s licenses and diplomas of Annabel Siteman as well as examination papers for various clerk positions. Records are incomplete. PDF document:Liscomb Burial Register (1868 – 1959). Prior to 1843 the Municipality of St. Mary’s did not have a Church of England / Anglican clergyman assigned to the area. Visiting missionaries, ministers, and even a bishop occasionally travelled through the area beginning as early as 1822. The first permanent clergyman, Joseph Alexander, arrived on the Eastern Shore as an itinerant catechist in 1843. Alexander, a native of Yorkshire, England, ministered approximately from Beaver Harbour, Halifax County, to Torbay, Guysborough County. Consequently early records pertaining to the Municipality of St. Mary’s are incomplete and scattered. Churches were established as follows: St. James’, Sherbrooke, 1840; St. Thomas’, Indian Harbour Lake, 1854; St. Luke’s, Liscomb, 1857; St. John’s / St. Mary’s, St. Mary’s River, original begun ca 1846 – ca 1927; replaced by new building ca 1927 and consecrated 22 September 1932 as St. John’s (deconsecrated in 2012 and subsequently sold and moved to a nearby site for use as a private dwelling); St. Paul’s, Port Bickerton, 1891; St. Barnabas, Ecum Secum, opened 1887, consecrated 12 May 1889; St. Matthew’s, Marie Joseph, original “English Church” at Fancy’s Point consecrated 13 July 1858, replaced by new church, St. Matthew’s Anglican, Marie Joseph in 1906, deconsecrated 8 December 2004. 2017.007
