              Part of Helene Read fonds
              Series forms part of the Helene Read fonds and consists of a land indenture dated August 8, 1799 in which possession of land in Clam Harbour is passed from Robert, Colin, and Patrick Campbell and their wives to Thomas Stoddard. Series also includes information concerning other land grants in Clam Harbour belonging to the Campbell and Stoddard families between 1765 to 1894 and 1945. Four maps are also included in the series and include plans dated 1956 showing the division of the estate of James Stoddard as per his will, a map of the lands of Ralph Stoddard dated 1970, and two maps showing the subdivision of Lot 1 lands owned by Douglas F. Stoddard dated 1963. In addition there is one map of the land belonging to Robert Sr., Duncan, and Robert Campbell as well as two pages of microfilm copies of the land grant document presumably for that piece of land c. 1760. All maps pertain to land in Clam Harbour. Series also contains copies of the wills of James Edward Stoddard, Thomas Stoddard, Adam Stoddard, Edmund Fanning Stoddard, and documents concerning the estate of Nancy Stoddard.               Fonds consists primarily of documents related to Katherine L. Stoddard’s research and her interest in genealogy, particularly that of her own family. Stoddard’s records include information related to many Eastern Shore families, including the Stoddard and Ritcey families, as well as local history. Fonds also includes correspondence, cookbooks and handwritten recipes, photographs, postcards, maps, certificates, land grants, yearbooks, deeds, and wills. Accession number: 2013.008

              Series forms part of Katherine L. Stoddard fonds and consists of three land deeds including one for land in Hantsport purchased from Charles Cowley Brown and his wife Emma by Robert J. Stoddard, Master Mariner, for six hundred dollars in 1924; one for land in Kings County purchased from George A. and Louise Yeaton by Robert J. Stoddard for one dollar in 1924; and one for land in Horton, King’s County, purchased by Robert J. Stoddard of Musquodoboit Harbour from John L. and Eunice E. Graham for three thousand six hundred dollars in 1923. Series also includes transcripts of a grant for five hundred acres to Thomas Stoddard dated September, 1784. Also includes typed transcripts of memorials written by Michael Eisan to the governor discussing a request for land in Jeddore and a later purchase of land in Ship Harbour c. 1786-1791 as well as another memorial dated 1796, wherein Eisan requests that he be granted permission to take possession of some back lands to attempt to raise grain in order to sustain his family, as he and his neighbors were having difficulty doing so on their current land in Ship Harbour; it being so close to the sea. Another transcript includes a deed for 200 acres on Lot. 20 purchased by Eisan from Joseph Lumb (or Lamb) for nine pounds in 1791. The transcripts also include a rejected petition made by Michael Eisan, Loyalist, for relief due to loss of property in South Carolina. The series also includes transcripts of the will of Thomas Stoddard of Clam Harbour dated 1813, bequeathing his land to his sons Walter Hercules, Thomas Ratchford, George William Sherlock, and Edmund Fanning. Michael Eisan (1730-1833) was the grandfather of Katherine Stoddard’s great grandmother Elizabeth Eisan. Accession number: 2013.008

              Series forms part of the Annabel (Sitman) Ells fonds and consists of information from census records collected and copied by Annabel Ells as well as court papers. Documents include census abstracts for Ship Harbour, Shoal Bay, Little Harbour, Pope’s Harbour, Clam Harbour, Tangier, Owl’s Head, and Mushaboom as well as census records listing heads of families for Districts 26 and 27 including Pope’s Harbour, East Ship Harbour, Jeddore, Clam Harbour, and Little Harbour. Also included are notes on Electoral District 24-26 with voter lists. Court papers include abstracts from Supreme Court records as well as individual cases that include such family names as Abbott, Bean, Blakely (Blakeney), Curry, Den, Eisan, Lessee, Marks, Merryweather, Murphy, O’ Brien, Reardon, Rennels, Robson, Shellnutt, Silver, Siteman, Stoddard, Sutherland, Thorogood, Tucker, and Weaver (Webber).               Series forms part of the Annabel (Siteman) Ells fonds and consists of correspondence regarding the establishment of a school at Ship Harbour, school trustee documents, school returns and registers for Ship Harbour school. Also includes correspondence from Clam Harbour school section, a memorial of the inhabitants of Egmont Harbour, Jeddore regarding the establishment of a school and church and aid to support a teacher. Also consists of school papers from Pictou County, particularly Toney River, and other school records gathered by Annabel Ells during the course of her research. In addition, series includes original high school certificates, teacher’s licenses and diplomas of Annabel Siteman as well as examination papers for various clerk positions.               Series forms part of Anna Barbara Webber family fonds and consists of an 1834 grant issued to James Peter Webber and Andrew Webber for a 100-acre piece of land along Mary’s River near Clam Harbour. Series also includes a sheet of notes, probably written by Frances Robson, describing the history of ownership of William Wilson Webber’s Upper Lakeville property. Accession number: 2010.009

              Part of Laura F. Stoddard family fonds
              Series is part of the Laura F. Stoddard family fonds and consists of three envelopes of quilt patterns and seven cards with instructions for various dance steps including the waltz quadrille, polka quadrille, first sett quadrilles, military polka, Saratoga lancers, lancers, and the Caledonia quadrille. Series also includes two watercolour paintings by H. Brownhill. Harold Brownhill of Halifax was registered at the Stoddard Hotel on August 25, 1946. Both paintings features landscapes and one shows the Clam Harbour Church with the original steeple. Series also includes a photograph of one of the paintings. Harold Brownhill was born in 1887 in Sheffield, England and married Eugenie Mason of Halifax on July 10, 1916. Harold worked as an accountant and they had five children: Donald Hugh, Eugenie, Hazel, Douglas Sydney, and Roberta Grace. Series also consists of one poem by Burns Marks of Ship Harbour entitled Good Hopes in Britain’s Pride. Burns ‘Austin’ Marks was born July 14, 1898 in Ship Harbour. His parents were Catherine Caroline Quinn and Martin Gay Black Marks of Ship Harbour. Burns Marks died July 14, 1964 in Halifax. He was known locally as a poet and wrote many other poems related to local history and residents. Series also consists of one brochure for Camp Charlotte, Ship Harbour Lake. The brochure asks interested visitors to book through a Miss Helen R. Saunders and Miss Annie G. Creighton, USA. Camp Charlotte was just an idea that never actually came to be, no camp was established. Accession number: 2013.010

              Fonds consists of correspondence written to Walter, Hannah, and Laura Stoddard as well as records related to churches and church societies and memorabilia related to the First World War that was found in the Stoddard Hotel. Fonds also contains financial records including insurance policies and tax receipts as well as post office records including ledgers of records of registered mail. Remaining records include permits, dance step instructions, quilt patterns, paintings by Harold Brownhill, a poem by Burns Marks, a label from E. Homan’s clam cannery, a brochure for a Camp Charlotte, a sign erected by the Cranberry Committee, and a business card and photograph of Judge F. M. Morson. Accession number 2013.010
