In Ottawa in 1946 a group of citizens concerned with planning problems in Canada formed the Community Planning Association of Canada. The Association was funded by the Central Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) through the National Housing Act. The group endeavored to educate and involve community members in local planning initiatives and to help more people and groups become involved with community planning at every level.
The organization grew and eventually divisions were started in the provinces. In 1954, the first information session for CPAC Nova Scotia was held in Windsor, NS. Since then, CPAC NS has been heavily involved in the national organization as it takes part in National Council meetings. In Nova Scotia, CPAC has been heavily involved with community planning, helping with conferences, offering advice to local governments, and bringing together community members to discuss planning issues.
The Nova Scotia Division of CPAC is run by a board of governors, with an executive committee and a program committee.
Custodial history
Records were donated to the Dalhousie University Archives in October 1980 by Joanne Lamey, then the executive director for CPAC NS. Joanne Lamey was also heavily involved with the organization as an executive secretary.
Scope and content
Fonds includes reports, publications, financial reports, annual reports, meeting notes and minutes, correspondence and general documentation showing the activities of CPAC NS.

Much of the arrangement of files and the hand-written notes were created by Joanne Lamey, the donor of the papers.
