Scope and content

Series forms part of the Nova Scotia Registrar of Joint Stock Companies fonds and consists of registration ledgers recording the name of company, how incorporated (under what statute and in which jurisdiction), type of business, dollar amount of capital authorized, location of head office, local agent, registration number and fees paid. As the Registry has changed systems some pages originally in binders were removed and are now found in file folders. Series also includes an index to companies registered from 1904 to 1914. Series is arranged primarily in chronologic order. Companies incorporated in jurisdictions other than Nova Scotia were required by the Domestic, Dominion and Foreign Corporations Act of 1912 to register with the Registry of Joint Stock Companies in order to carry on business in the province. Locally incorporated companies were also required to register. While the records in this series were not created after 1958 annotations to some of the records, usually relating to removing businesses from the register, continued into the mid 1960s.
