Biographical history
Daniel Fraser, a trader at Pictou, Pictou County, Nova Scotia, was born to Donald Banes Fraser and Christiana McQueen on 13 April 1770. He immigrated to Halifax from Invernesshire in 1789 and became an active member of the local militia and business community. As his Halifax business grew, he slowly began purchasing land, including a stone quarry, in Pictou County. In 1800, Fraser married Catherine MacKay, the daughter of Roderick MacKay. Following the War of 1812 Fraser, like many other traders, incurred huge losses due to the down-turn of peace-time business. His debts were so large that he ended up in debtors prison in 1816. During that year the Fraser home suffered a devastating fire. The following year however, Fraser was released by a pardon from the House of Assembly. The family moved to Pictou in 1818 and then to Saint John, New Brunswick in 1820. However, after suffering further financial hardship, the family again returned to Pictou. Most of Fraser's children were well educated and grew to occupy respectable standings within the community. The most notable of his children was J.B.D. Fraser who was a successful druggist and chemist at Pictou.
