The Board, which existed 1971-1996, advised Council on matters relating to Dartmouth's lakes, including the operations of the Lake Safety Patrol and the Lake Safety By-law.The Board was composed of a member of Council, a member from the staff of the Engineering Department appointed by the City Administrator, a biologist from the Bedford Institute of Oceanography, a physical scientist from the Defence Research Board, a lawyer with environmental law background from the Nova Scotia Barristers Society, a chemist from the Nova Scotia Research Foundation, a teacher from the Dartmouth Board of School Commissioners, a member of the Community Planning Association of Canada (Nova Scotia Branch), a member of the Dartmouth YM/YWCA, a member of the Senobe Aquatic Club, a member of the Abenaki Aquatic Club, a member of the Mic Mac Amateur Aquatic Club, a member of the Banook Canoe Club, a member of the Urban Developers Institute, and a member of the Portland Estates Residents Association. The Board met monthly. It had originally been known as the Lake Control.
Scope and content
Series consists of the agendas, minutes and correspondence of the Dartmouth Lakes Advisory Board. Also includes a brief history and news clippings about and articles of interest to the DLAB.
Immediate source of acquisition
The first accession of materials was transferred from HRM's Municipal Clerk's Office in 2005. Additional records were donated by Donald Gordon, Bedford Institute of Oceanography representative on the board, in 2010.
