History

The Dartmouth Police Department was founded in 1874, one year after the foundation of the Town of Dartmouth. It took over the task of policing Dartmouth from the Halifax Police Department. In addition to patrolling a day beat and a night beat, the police were responsible for delivering tax and water bills, and collecting money from people in debt, under the authority of the municipal court. They also operated a police court, which prosecuted minor offences. In 1900 the first revolver was purchased for the Department. Before 1920, less than 4 constables were part of the department. In 1922, the Police Force was officially drawn up, and expanded from two constables and a cheif to include five officers. A mounted unit was established in 1925 and motorcycles in 1936. In 1996 the Dartmouth Police Department was merged with the Halifax and Bedford Police Departments to form Halifax Regional Police.
