Administrative history
David Nelson was a Tatamagouche, Colchester County, Nova Scotia merchant. He was born 7 February 1834 at Waugh's River. In 1890 he moved to Tatamagouche where he established his general store. He married Mary MacLeod and they had four children: Etta (b. 1891), John (b. 1893), Mary (b. 1886) and William (b. 1888). Nelson was a supporter of the Liberal party and was the area representative on the Municipal Council. He served as Warder from 1899-1903 and was chairman of the Board of North Colchester. Nelson died on 17 December 1920. For a time following his death the store was probably operated by his family.
Custodial history
Anna Hamilton found them in a shed on the property of the late William M. Nelson, son of David. Nelson had been an estate lawyer in Tatamagouche and it was thought that he collected items of historical value via his vocation. Also contained in fonds are several receipts which are stored with the William M. Nelson collection and fonds.
