              Fonds
              The fonds consists of administrative papers, blueprints, business and personal correspondence, cable code books and other reference works, export orders and papers, financial documents, insurance papers, legal documents, packaging samples, photographs, plans, printed material, reports, and vessels papers. The material spans 176 years and illustrates a family company passed through two incarnations and through several generations of administration, along with its related off-shoots companies and associations. The material deals with late 19th and early 20 century shipping, as well as the 20th century business of packing and exporting salt fish. The fonds also contains papers of associated small companies including L.W. Vatcher Limited, and subsidiaries Acadia Fisheries and Smith Canneries, as well as papers from various investment dealings made by Fletcher S. Smith, including Parkdale Realty, Southern Realties, and Fenpark Realties, and agencies with which the Smiths were involved. Finally, the fonds includes various items from small companies including Dan Dauphiney Company Limited, Earle-Smith Partnership, Eastern Fisheries Limited, Fudge Shipping Company, Georgian Limited, Scotia Corporations, Sea Nymph Fisheries, and Smith/Romkey. These papers include correspondence, administrative documents, legal contracts and agreements, financial statements, journals and ledgers. The records of the fonds demonstrate the organizational structure, management, and operations of A.M. Smith and Company and related organizations, and provide insight into the business of salt fish, from fishing and processing to packing and exportation. The material provides a comprehensive picture of a significant 20th century Nova Scotian enterprise. MS-4-23

              E. Homans clam factory

              Part of Laura F. Stoddard family fonds
              Series is part of the Laura F. Stoddard fonds and consists of one label for canned clams packaged in Clam Harbour by E. Homans. Ebenezer Homans (1858-1933) owned a clam factory in Clam Harbour (c. 1920s) in addition to a lobster factory in Little Harbour (c. 1930s-1940s) and a general store which he established in 1901, making him the first storekeeper in the Clam Harbour area. He was the father of John Homans, who took over the family store following the death of his father. Accession number: 2013.010

              Part of Eastern Shore Archives map collection
              Series forms part of the Eastern Shore Archives map collection and consists of one map of Nova Scotia indicating motor roads and recreational resources. Inshore and lake fishing areas are marked, as well as game areas for moose, deer and bear. Also includes a 1909 copy of a 1903 map of Tangiers Lumber and Halifax Co., NS, surveyed by H. W. Andrews. The map was applied for by Alfred Dickie in 1903 and shows land grants and Crown lands in the Tangiers area and features names of property holders and the amount of acreage owned. A lumber mill as erected by the Tangier River sometime around the turn of the twentieth century by Rufus E. Dickie of Stewiacke, son of Alfred Dickie.               Fonds consists of correspondence written to Walter, Hannah, and Laura Stoddard as well as records related to churches and church societies and memorabilia related to the First World War that was found in the Stoddard Hotel. Fonds also contains financial records including insurance policies and tax receipts as well as post office records including ledgers of records of registered mail. Remaining records include permits, dance step instructions, quilt patterns, paintings by Harold Brownhill, a poem by Burns Marks, a label from E. Homan’s clam cannery, a brochure for a Camp Charlotte, a sign erected by the Cranberry Committee, and a business card and photograph of Judge F. M. Morson. Accession number 2013.010
              Lena Ferguson fonds

              Fonds consists of approximately 137 hours of oral history interviews conducted by Lena Ferguson. Most interviewees were residents of the Eastern Shore region of Halifax County, particularly the Chezzetcook area. Interview topics include genealogy, local industries, occupations, music, shipping, community life, traditions, and folklore. In addition to interviews, the creator recorded school reunions, concerts, weddings, and church anniversaries. Several paper transcripts are included as well as scrapbooks featuring articles written by Lena and other newspaper articles regarding the Chezzetcook area. 2019.014

              Collection contains documents relating to the mercantile and shipping activities of William McMillan, McMillan was active in the business between 1893 and the early 1930's. Records include receipts, invoices and other material from other merchants he purchased or sold to, correspondence regarding the shipping of those goods, papers regarding the vessels he owned or contracted to sail the material to different parts of the world and correspondence from individuals who ran the ships. Also included are telegram notices, personal correspondence and other material. This collection also contains material from the Locke Family, the Harding Family, all in Lockeport, Nova Scotia. It also contains documents from different individuals in the town of Lockeport. Part of the material included in this collection is the research of Trevor Bebb. He was working on the shipping history of Lockeport and the surrounding areas and as such has collected a great deal of material. Included in his papers are research notes, photocopies of shipping and customs records, diaries and logs, and printed material. MS-4-177
