Administrative history

The Friends of International Students was founded by Lenore Mencher and began as the Host Family Association in 1982. It was created in order to bring together interested families in the Halifax-Dartmouth area with international students attending local universities in an effort to establish meaningful, cross cultural connections with the community. Participation in the program was voluntary and students did not reside with or receive monetary support from the host family.

Internally the association was run by an advisory board made up of university staff, international students, host representatives, and members-at-large. The advisory board was responsible for policy and the general philosophy of the organization, the committees made recommendations to enact decisions made by the advisory board.

The group was formed in conjunction with various Halifax area institutions (Saint Mary's University, Mount Saint Vincent University, Dalhousie University, the former Technical University of Nova Scotia, the Nova Scotia Institute of Technology, and the International Education Centre). The group was disbanded in 1998.
