Biographical history
George Albert Slaunwhite, the son of David Slaunwhite (a carpenter) and Sarah Backman, was born at Mahone Bay in 1854. Active for many decades as a mariner, Slaunwhite served on numerous Lunenburg County vessels engaged in the West Indies trade and the local fishery. He also owned shares in several vessels. Slaunwhite obtained his mate’s certificate in 1883. In 1893, he married Mildred Eudora Dolliver of Port Medway. Slaunwhite later lived with his brother David in Mader’s Cove. Slauwnwhite died at Mader’s Cove in 1932.
Custodial history
The records formed part of an archival backlog held by the Mahone Bay Museum. No information is available regarding the custody of the records following Slaunwhite’s death in 1932. However, it is probable that they were part of a donation made by Lois (Merchant) Smith in the mid-1990s. A portrait of Mildred Eudora (Dolliver) Slaunwhite (acc. No. 2019.15) was found in the museum’s backlog in 2019.
Scope and content
Fonds consists of correspondence, a diary, invoices, receipts, statements, certificates, indentures, and photographs mainly documenting aspects of Slaunwhite’s long sea-faring career. The diary records a trip from Bridgewater to Puerto Rico and Boston on the brigantine Maggie in 1877. The records also include a few documents relating to Slaunwhite’s family, including his wife, parents, and his brother-in-law Edwin Bailly of Lunenburg.
