Biographical history
Gordon Daniel Hibbert Ernst, son of Wilbert Alexander Ernst and Bessie (Slauenwhite) Ernst, was born in 1911 at Blockhouse, Nova Scotia. When he was 12 years old, Ernst joined his father working in the woods. A few years later, he started working at the Blockhouse Gold Mine. When the mine closed in 1938, he went to work at the John McLean & Sons shipyard in Mahone Bay as a shipwright, eventually becoming the yard’s foreman. Ernst, who married Ruth Marguerite Ernst in 1941, died at Mahone Bay in 1984.

Scope and content
Fonds consists primarily of photographs documenting vessels built by the John McLean & Sons shipyard in Mahone Bay.
