        History

        Francis Grant was born 12 December 1904 at Wallace, Nova Scotia to Wylie (1874-1960) and Annie Charman Grant (1881-1970). He had one sister and five brothers. In 1922 he left Wallace in search of employment in the Canadian west, but quickly returned to be the telegraph operator. He then returned to Alberta to work as a telegraph operator. In 1928 he married Josephine Lore and had one son Jim and one daughter Dorothy-Anne. In 1942 he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and served until 1945. Upon his return, he began working in the family store, Grant's General Store, until he retired in 1969. Throughout his life he collected and wrote about Wallace area history, people and the sea, publishing five books of poetry, two novels and numerous stories in the local newspaper, The Strait News. Francis Grant died on 17 January 1981.
