              Part of Eastern Shore Archives map collection
              Series forms part of the Eastern Shore Archives map collection and consists of copies of topographical maps of Halifax County published by A. F. (Ambrose Finson) Church & Co. of Granville St., Halifax in 1865. The maps were produced from actual surveys drawn and engraved under the direction of H. F. Walling and bear certification indicating that they were entered according to law on the twenty-fourth day of March, 1864 by Ambrose F. Church, although they were not published until the following year. They also include plans of townships and directories for businesses in Halifax and various other localities, which identify prominent citizens and tradesmen. In addition, they include names of heads of households, statistics for vessels, population, education, religion, and acres of improved land as well as information on locations of ports of entry, post offices, telegraph stations and way offices.               Part of Halifax County Court of Probate records
              Sub-series contains documents relating to the settling of estates in files opened at the Halifax County is County Registry of Probate from 1750 to 1930. Documents include original wills, petitions for probate or administration, oaths taken and bonds furnished by executors or administrators, records of decisions made by the registrar of probate, valuations and inventories of estates, and accounts furnished at the estates' closing showing financial transactions of the estate. Petitions for probate or administration generally give the place and date of death. All documents do not exist for all estates. RG 48 Vol. 396 to 426; Microfilm 19,396 to 19,426.

              Original hand drawn map which shows the topographical junction point of Colchester, Halifax and Guysborough Counties. This is an early, undated map, but since Guysborough was officially named in 1836, we know this map to be later than this date, but likely no later than 1875. The map shows land grants and grantee names, waterways and roads. Of note is Windsor College marked on 5 acres. 2019.24.1
