      History

The Advisory Committee on the Preservation of Historic Buildings was formed in 1965 and consisted of thirteen members including aldermen, city staff, representatives from the Department of Northern Affairs and Natural Resources, and local citizens. The committee was also known as the Interim Advisory Committee on the Preservation of Historic Buildings and the Civic Advisory Committee on the Preservation of Historic Buildings. The committee’s function was to indicate which buildings within the redevelopment area of Upper Water Street between George and Buckingham Streets might be worthy of restoration; to recommend how such restorations might be financed; and indicate how the buildings might be used once restored. The committee also expressed interest in establishing a Landmarks Commission to examine historical buildings throughout the city. In 1967 the committee was restructured to act as an interim advisory committee to council, lay the groundwork for a Landmarks Commission, and begin work on the related legislation. The committee consisted of six members including an alderman and members of the public. The interim committee was subsequently replaced by the Halifax Landmarks Commission in 1970. The Landmarks Commission consisted of nine members, including aldermen and residents, and was responsible for reviewing city development plans affecting historic sites and landmarks. The Landmarks Commission is known to have been active until at least 1976. Sources:
