Administrative history

The Advisory Committee on the Concerns of Ageing (also spelt Aging) was originally established in February 1981 as the Committee on Concerns of Elderly Citizens but changed its name on 29 June 1982. The committee’s structure changed shortly after it was formed to consist of two aldermen; a representative for each of the twelve wards to be appointed by council; a citizen at large; a representative from the Senior Citizens Council and the Council of Churches; an independent Chairman; and a representative from the Social Planning Department. The function of the committee was to study topics concerning ageing and make recommendations to council. Relevant topics for discussion and study included housing, lunch programs, adult education recreation, transportation, and health care among others.
