Custodial history

Plans were given to the Public Archives of Nova Scotia ca. 1975 by F. Marshall; repatriated to HRM in 200?.

Scope and content

Sub-series consists of property plans used by the City of Halifax Assessment Office in assessing property values. Each sheet shows property boundaries and dimensions (in ft.), and the footprint of any buildings, including porches. For many properties the property owner is pencilled in and was updated over time(it is uncertain for what time period ownership is accurate). Changes to street names and street-lines were recorded over time; some property sub-divisions are over-written. The footprint and name of some buildings (mainly public, large commercial and industrial buildings) are on the base map. Also shows railways, piers, wharves, tram lines. Only the Halifax peninsula is included, not the western areas annexed from the County in 1969. See attachment below of the specifications for the Assessment Plan tendered by the City Engineer - from Deputy Mayor Henry Colwell fonds (CR13.2)

Availability of other formats

The base-plan sheets have been scanned from a book held by the Survey Office; however the digital files do not show pencilled in notes re. property ownership, changes to street-names or lines - contact the Archives for access/copies. Also available on microfilm no.4756n at HRM Archives and microfilm 960 at NS Archives. Microfilm was created by NSA in 1976. The pencilled notes re. property ownership and dimensions does not come through in the microfilm or digital copy. The sheet numbers are not always visible on the microfilm, but they have been filmed in numeric order. Each sheet is captured on 2-3 microfilm images.
