Scope and content

Sub-series consists of road books used to record residents' payment for road work, either through taxes or performing statute labour. The books do not provide street addresses, but do provide lists of resident's names associated with the ward they resided in. The books predate the later City of Halifax numbered ward system; instead, wards are described as "St. Matthew's Ward", "Coffee House Ward", "South Suburbs".
