Administrative history

The Board of Fire Escapes was established by 1907 under the provisions of the Fire Escapes Act. Originally the board consisted of three council members but by 1964 the three members of the board consisted of the Inspector of Buildings, the Chief of the Fire Department, and the City Electrician. The board was responsible for inspecting fire escapes in buildings and ensuring that they conformed to regulations regarding their location, maintenance, and construction. In later years the board reported to the city’s Fire Marshall and was only responsible for fire escapes in public buildings but it is unclear whether this was also the case when the board was initially formed.

Custodial history

The minute book from 1907-1912 was transferred from NSARM to HRM in 2004 and was accessioned by the archives in 2005. The custodial history of the other records in the series is uncertain. Although not listed as part of this transfer they are thought to have been received from NSARM at the same time. \n\n
