Administrative history

Referred to as both the City Health Board and the Board of Health, this body was established in 1841 and was active until 1940 when replaced by the Public Health and Welfare Committee. Upon incorporation, the mayor and aldermen of the city assumed the powers of a board of health for the city, harbour, and surrounding areas. The board was generally responsible for the health of the city, and while its exact structure, powers, and duties changed over time, at one time or another they included registering and licensing plumbers, their work, and their materials; managing the location and regulation of slaughter houses; the inspection and regulation of food and milk; the management and maintenance of hospitals for infectious diseases; regulating kept animals within the city; and enforcing the Public Health Act. The board usually included at least one experienced, practicing doctor. Sources An Act to Incorporate the Town of Halifax, Statutes of Nova Scotia, 1841, c. LV, s. LXV.
