Administrative history

The Board of Management of Basinview Home was established in about 1959 when Basinview officially opened as a home for special care. Responsible for supervising and managing the home, the board was composed of the Committee on Public Health and Welfare together with four people appointed by the province. The joint management of the home reflected the joint financing of the institution. In 1958, the province passed the Social Assistance Act, which financially assisted municipalities with administering, maintaining, and operating homes for special care. The Committee on Public Health and Welfare, on the other hand, was mandated to provide for the city’s poor which included furnishing “support in the Basinview Home to every poor and indigent person having a settlement as defined in that Act [Social Assistance Act].” City Council had the power to set an ordinance for the control and management of the Home, which the board then followed and operated under. Basinview Home was closed in 1976 so the board likely dissolved at about that time. Sources The Statutes of Nova Scotia, 1959, c. 57, s. 50, 203.
