Scope and content

Sub-series consists of records of applications for building permits submitted to the City of Halifax Building Inspector's Office. Construction of new buildings and repairs or alterations to existing buildings required a building permit. The applications give the location of the construction, name of owner, date of application, name of architect, builder, estimated cost, type of building, and construction details (information required varied over time). Building Inspectors, health inspectors etc. would review applications and either issue a permit or not. Some applications have comments from the building inspectors, justification for not issuing permit, or letters of authorization from the building owner or the Halifax Relief Commission. Permits were usually on cards (blue for new buildings; white for repairs and pink for alterations). Cards for 1906-1978 were filed alphabetically by street-name; within each street-group the cards are filed approximately chronologically newest to oldest. Permits for 1896, 1898-1905 are in 23 files with no apparent order. Most of these do not have an application number (See files 102-39-I.5 to .28). Series also contains 4 registers: Record of Building Permits Issued, 1892-1907; 1929-1949. Permits are listed chronologically giving the date permit issued, permit number, name of owner, name of applicant, civic address of building, as well as comments on the proposed construction such as "new building, repairs, garage, awning", etc. Later entries include the monetary value of the work and the date permit expires. There are also index cards summarizing the monthly number and value of building permits (repair and new dwellings) issued 1935-1949.
