History
The Committee on Roads and Bridges was a standing committee whose members were appointed annually by council. Established in 1879, the committee had the general supervision of the roads and bridges of the municipality, which entailed hearing petitions regarding changes to road districts; approving the layout of new roads; repairing roads and bridges; and reporting to Council on the condition of roads and bridges including any repairs made, the costs of repair or construction work undertaken, as well as future estimates for the same. The committee was also responsible for managing road accounts and, after about 1882, matters related to statute labour. The committee was active until 1951 when the municipal government's organizational structure underwent significant changes. At that time responsibility for roads and bridges was transferred to the newly established Public Services Committee.
