        History

The Jail Committee was established as a standing committee appointed by council in 1924. The committee, usually consisting of three council members was responsible for inspecting the jail and its prisoners and reporting to council. In 1952 Halifax County's municipal government underwent significant organizational changes and a newly formed Welfare Committee became responsible for the jail.
