Administrative history

The Downtown Halifax Business Improvement District Commission (BIDC) was established in 1987 under City of Halifax Ordinance 182. Initially called the Barrington Street Business Improvement District Commission, the scope of its activities was Barrington Street and the surrounding area in downtown Halifax.

The Commission was composed of eight members (increased to fifteen in 1991), including one Council member, a number of business representatives, and a smaller number of residents or other people with an interest in the area. It was also called the Downtown Halifax Business Commission, and became the HRM's Downtown Halifax Business Commission after regional amalgamation in 1996.
