      History

The Free Port Committee was formed in 1960 as a special committee to examine a proposal that the Port of Halifax become a free port. The committee consisted of nine members, including the mayor, two aldermen, and six members of the public. Initially formed as the Special Committee to study the Free Port and Latin America Trade Fair Proposals, the committee appears to have divided to study the proposals separately. The second committee, the Cultural and Trade Fair Committee, was composed of the same members as the Free Port Committee. It is unknown when the committee disbanded.
