History
Policing in Halifax began in 1749 with a Day Watch of peace officers. A Night Watch was formed in 1799 in response to a series of break-and-enters. When Halifax incorporated as a city in 1841, a Police Department of nine men was set up under a City Marshall, with the Night Watch remaining separate. In 1864 they combined under the City Marshall, later the Chief of Police. The Department continued to exist until 1996, when it was merged with the Dartmouth and Bedford police departments to form the Halifax Regional Police.
