        History

In 1873 the Halifax Police Department's detective division was established. The detectives, who wore plain clothes rather than the police uniform, investigated crimes referred to it by the patrol division. Detectives generally dealt with crimes that required an in-depth investigation. In 1996 the Division was replaced by the amalgamated Halifax Regional Police Criminal Investigation Division.
