Historique
The Redevelopment Committee began as the Housing Committee, and appears to have been formed in about 1957. The committee appears to have been responsible for redeveloping substandard areas of the city which necessitated acquiring and clearing lands, and then planning their redevelopment. Land was most often redeveloped to provide additional public housing. Residents of substandard areas received compensation and were given the option of moving to housing projects. In 1958, the Housing Committee changed its name to the Redevelopment Committee. The last meeting was held on January 7, 1964, after which the Committee’s duties were passed onto the newly created Development Committee, which was also responsible for other, expanded duties. In 1967 a Housing Committee was reformed to address housing redevelopment programs.
