Name of creator
Dr. Scammell was born on The Island, East River, Pictou County in 1905. He received his early education at Pictou Academy and graduated from Dalhousie Medical School in 1927.
He practiced medicine in Pictou for one year and then returned to Halifax in 1928 to become Resident Physician at Victoria General Hospital. In 1929, he was appointed Inspector of Hospitals by the American College of Physicians and Surgeons. His work involved the appraisal of some 300 hospitals in Canada and the United States.
In 1931 he joined the Victoria General Hospital as the Medical Assistant Superintendent and later became the Registrar and Secretary Treasurer of the Provincial Medical Board. In the following years, he worked as Medical Officer with the Workmen's Compensation Board.
Dr. Scammell was the Registrar and Executive Assistant to the President of Dalhousie University in addition to lecturing in the Faculty of Medicine. His professional accomplishments include the development of the Dalhousie Student Counselling Service as well as the Bachelor of Science in Nursing course. For his contributions, he was named Dalhousie Medical Alumnus of the Year in 1986. He passed away on January 21, 1991.
The records were donated by Dr. H.L. Scammell in 1971.
Scope and content
Fonds consists of correspondence in association with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia and correspondence regarding his involvement with the Provincial Medical Board. Other papers include financial records, miscellaneous publications, and personal notes. The fonds includes records from his years at Dalhousie University, including student information.
