    Administrative history

Tracy Gorham Harding, of Tusket, Yarmouth County, Nova Scotia, erected a building, between 1837-1840, on the town's main street in which he established the Hatfield General Store. He married ca. 1840 Sarah Cochran of New York City and had four children. Tracy died in 1846, and his wife operated the store until she married Isaac S. Hatfield, ca. 1850. Isaac was born in 1826 at Tusket Lakes, the son of Captain James and Elizabeth (Lent) Hatfield and was the brother of Forman Cornelius Hatfield. From 1855 until the time of his death in 1872, he served as a Justice of the Peace for Argyle Township. Between 1863-1867, he served as a Conservative member of the Provincial Legislative Assembly for Argyle Township. Along with running the general store, Isaac was also involved in shipbuilding and shipowning. In 1891, Tracy Gorham Harding Hatfield, the son of Caroline (Harding) and Peter L. Hatfield, purchased the Hatfield General Store from his aunt's estate (who died in 1891). He operated the store until 1919, when Tracy G. H. Hatfield willed it to his son Peter Lent Hatfield. Tracy G. Hatfield owned and operated another general store, which was commonly known as the Central Store, in the center of Tusket Village, which later became the property of his son, Elmer C. Hatfield. In 1919, with the takeover by Peter Lent Hatfield, the scope of operations of the store shifted from general grocery items, to solely dry goods. The store was sold in 1952 to Daniel W. Armstrong and ceased operations in 1953.

    Custodial history

The records contained in the fonds were donated to the Argyle Township Court House Archives in October 1989 by Susan, Cathy and Christopher Young in the memory of their parents, the late John and Phyllis W. (Hatfield) Young of Tusket, who were the most recent owners of the building which housed the Hatfield General Store.
