        History

Nathaniel Hebb, the son of Rachel (Langille) and Joseph Hebb, was born in 1840 at Newcombville in Lunenburg County, Nova Scotia. During his early life he was engaged as a teacher, eventually settling, in 1872, in Blockhouse, Nova Scotia, where he soon became a leading citizen. In 1875, he was appointed as a Justice of the Peace. In 1917, he became a stipendiary magistrate. He also served the community in a number of other capacities, including as a member of the Lunenburg District’s municipal council, as secretary of the Blockhouse Agricultural Society, and as the local presiding officer for various elections. In 1892-93, as a member of the municipal council, he was caught up in a controversy surrounding the intense rivalry between Bridgewater and Lunenburg for the site of a new county courthouse. Hebb was married three times. His first wife was Albertina Eisenhaur, whom he married in 1866. Following her death, he married Victoria Langille (1839-1908). He married his third wife, Martha Victoria Zwicker (1854-1927), in 1908. Hebb, who was still active in legal affairs in his nineties, died at Blockhouse in 1937.
