Stoddard fonds and consists of one certificate of discharge from the Mercantile Marine Office for Robert Stoddard, seaman, from the ship Champion, of Halifax, dated April 5, 1882. Stoddard had served since December 14th of the previous year. Robert Jamison Stoddard was the grandfather of Katherine L. Stoddard. Accession number: 2013.008

Series forms part of Katherine L. Stoddard fonds and consists primarily of letters written to Katherine Stoddard by various correspondents between 1978 and 1998, including Robert Ritcey, Robert Kim Stevens, and others. Most pertain to genealogy related to families along the Eastern Shore, however, some are also personal in nature. Series also contains two letters from the First World War addressed to Mr. and Mrs. R. J. Stoddard concerning their son Private F. T. Stoddard. There is also a note from the Mercantile Marine Office concerning the wages of Robert Stoddard and dated 1882. The series also contains letters to Katherine’s mother, Eva Stoddard, from Annabel (likely Annabel Siteman); a letter to Lena from a Ritcey, and a letter to Bob Stoddard from his brother Thomas dated 1927. Series also includes several letters written to and by Robert Ritcey concerning the development of Martinique Beach as a National Park, letters from the Department of Tourism and Culture, a letter from the Department of Education concerning a gift agreement for a donation to the Nova Scotia Museum, and a letter from the Church Conservancy of Nova Scotia. Series forms part of the Katherine L. Stoddard fonds and consists of genealogical research and records pertaining to various Eastern Shore families. The families who feature most prominently are the Stoddards and Ritceys (Henrici), however, the Shellnut, Eisan, Anderson, Siteman, Gaetz (Gates), Newcomb, Bayers, Robson, MacEachern, Blaxland. Records appear primarily the result of research conducted by Katherine Stoddard, however, some records note that documents were copied by Annabel Siteman Ells and may have been intended for Katherine’s mother, Eva, who may also have conducted genealogical research. Series also includes an incomplete copy of A Brief History of the Stoddards of Halifax County written by Elsie Florence Stoddard. Records include information on many pioneer families on the Eastern Shore, including the families of Thomas Stoddard, Leonard and Martin Gaetz, and Henry Seidman (Seidemann) as well as information on the origins of the Ritcey family beginning with Johannis Christophorus Henrici. Records include handwritten information, copies of information from various sources including vital statistics and newspapers, and books in which Katherine Stoddard recorded information about her own family, one of which features a drawing of a map that shows various landowners around Clam Harbour and Owl’s Head. Fonds consists primarily of documents related to Katherine L. Stoddard’s research and her interest in genealogy, particularly that of her own family. Stoddard’s records include information related to many Eastern Shore families, including the Stoddard and Ritcey families, as well as local history. Series forms part of Katherine L. Stoddard fonds and consists of three land deeds including one for land in Hantsport purchased from Charles Cowley Brown and his wife Emma by Robert J. Stoddard, Master Mariner, for six hundred dollars in 1924; one for land in Kings County purchased from George A. and Louise Yeaton by Robert J. Stoddard for one dollar in 1924; and one for land in Horton, King’s County, purchased by Robert J. Stoddard of Musquodoboit Harbour from John L. and Eunice E. Graham for three thousand six hundred dollars in 1923. Series also includes transcripts of a grant for five hundred acres to Thomas Stoddard dated September, 1784. Also includes typed transcripts of memorials written by Michael Eisan to the governor discussing a request for land in Jeddore and a later purchase of land in Ship Harbour c. 1786-1791 as well as another memorial dated 1796, wherein Eisan requests that he be granted permission to take possession of some back lands to attempt to raise grain in order to sustain his family, as he and his neighbors were having difficulty doing so on their current land in Ship Harbour; it being so close to the sea. Another transcript includes a deed for 200 acres on Lot. 20 purchased by Eisan from Joseph Lumb (or Lamb) for nine pounds in 1791. The transcripts also include a rejected petition made by Michael Eisan, Loyalist, for relief due to loss of property in South Carolina. The series also includes transcripts of the will of Thomas Stoddard of Clam Harbour dated 1813, bequeathing his land to his sons Walter Hercules, Thomas Ratchford, George William Sherlock, and Edmund Fanning. Michael Eisan (1730-1833) was the grandfather of Katherine Stoddard’s great grandmother Elizabeth Eisan. Accession number: 2013.008

Series is part of the Katherine L. Stoddard fonds and consists of various articles and excerpts pertaining to different aspects of life and culture on the Eastern Shore including Musquodoboit Harbour, Petpeswick, and Ostrea Lake. Series includes recollections of life, events, and activities in the area in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and poems describing local scenes. Series includes an excerpt from the Evening Mail in 1922 containing stories of the Greenoughs of Petpeswick and memories, recollections, facts, and stories from Musquodoboit Harbour, Ostrea Lake and Point Pleasant, both about places themselves and the people, including one mention of R.J. Stoddard. Articles included describe sealing adventures in which Eastern Shore residents participated, hijackers on the Old Guysborough Road in the 1890s, and the history of the Ritcey family. There is also a copy of a poem about Petpeswick Harbour written by Verna MacDonald and an excerpt of an article describing the buildings that used to make up the village centre of Musquodoboit Harbour as well as an article about Robsons who moved from Clam Harbour to Estmere in Cape Breton and lived there from 1901 to 1909. Series forms part of the Katherine L. Stoddard fonds and consists of one postcard featuring a picture of the motel in Lake Charlotte c. 1970s. Also includes one copy of a photograph of Emily Usher Ritcey c. 1915. Emily Margaret Usher was born March 27, 1891 and was the daughter of William Philip Usher and Emily Anderson Mack of Musquodoboit Harbour. She married Herbert Simon Ritcey on January 26, 1915. They lived in Dartmouth and she died March 1, 1974. Herbert Simon Ritcey was born August 24, 1874 in West Petpeswick and was the son of Simon (ship captain) and Susanna Elizabeth (Gaetz) Ritcey. He was the brother of Katherine L. Stoddard’s paternal grandmother, Harriet “Edith” Ritcey Stoddard, making Emily Usher Ritcey her sister-in-law. Accession number: 2013.008

Series is part of the Katherine L. Stoddard fonds and consists of one yearbook or publication entitled The Academy Annual and dated Christmas, 1912. It would appear that the book probably belonged to Katherine Stoddard’s mother, Eva (Siteman) Stoddard as her name is written throughout the book as well as many references to Ship Harbour. The book was a publication of the Halifax Academy and contains various stories, photographs and information about the students attending the academy. On at least one page it is possible to make out the text of a letter that had been written and erased, making application to the Secretary of Trustees for a position at Ship Harbour School written by Eva Siteman in 1914. Eva likely attended the Halifax Academy in preparation to become a teacher. Accession number: 2013.008
