Women's Institute fonds

Fonds consist of records documenting the work and operation of seven Women’s Institute branches in the western region of Guysborough County: Denver-Newtown (1914-2012), Aspen-Glenelg (1914-1998), Sherbrooke (1914-1924), Port Hilford (1955-2000), Sonora (1931-1975), Seal Harbour-Drumhead (1968-1982), Port Bickerton (1949-2018). Also included are records of the wider Guysborough District of the Women’s Institute of Nova Scotia (1964-1998). The fonds include 51 books consisting of minutes of meetings, financial accounts, reports, membership lists, lists of directors and officers, and records of attendance. Interleaved within the books are miscellaneous receipts and correspondence. One photograph album with captions showing day-to-day life in the communities of Denver and Newtown (circa 1955), and “A History of the Village of Sherbrooke and Vicinity” (1947), created as part of the Tweedsmuir Village Books national competition. By 1914, Women’s Institute branches had formed in the communities of Newtown, Aspen-Glenelg, and Sherbrooke in Guysborough County following a visit by Miss Jennie Fraser, Superintendent of the Women's Institutes of Nova Scotia. The Guysborough District of the Women’s Institutes of Nova Scotia established educational programs for local women, held regular meetings and events, and convened district rallies. Early work of the Newtown (later Denver-Newtown), Aspen-Glenelg and Sherbrooke Women’s Institute branches centered on war relief and supporting the Red Cross through knitting socks and wristlets and making handkerchiefs and cheesecloth bandages. On 6 April 1917 the Sherbrooke branch resolved to support women’s right to vote. Meetings were often centered on themes concerning home economics, agriculture, health and welfare, readings and recitations. Lunches were frequently served at meetings, and institute picnics and banquets were popular. The branches evolved over the years in terms of activity and membership, with later members supporting graduating high school students through bursaries. 2014.005; 2016.003; 2018.001; 2018.016

Collection consists of letters, genealogy research, obituaries, newspaper clippings, poetry, a scrapbook, and numerous photographs created, compiled, or accumulated by Margaret Ellsworth relating to the Fraser family of Waternish, Guysborough County and their descendants living throughout Canada and the United States. Also included are materials relating to the MacIntosh family of Sherbrooke and the Giffin family of Isaac's Harbour, Guysborough County. Photographs range in date from the mid-19th century to the late 1980s, and include studio portraits, candid family and community snapshots, as well as landscape images of the St. Mary's River valley and Isaac's Harbour areas. 2016.001

Fonds consist of records created and accumulated by Florence M. MacDonald relating to her personal life and three generations of the Donald MacDonald family of Sherbrooke, Guysborough County. Included are a Gaelic language Bible (1867) belonging to Donald MacDonald; a cookbook (1879) interleaved with handwritten family recipes and recipe clippings belonging to Mrs. Donald MacDonald; and records relating to James Wm. MacDonald, Murray MacDonald, and John Geddie MacDonald. Also included are MacDonald family portraits and two photograph albums, one of Florence MacDonald and friends in Sherbrooke and Halifax, and another of lumbering, hunting, and fishing along the St. Mary's River; Province of Nova Scotia Department of Agriculture Domestic Science Bulletin No. 1, Women's Institute Division, The Cooking and Canning of Vegetables (1916); community newspaper clippings and obituaries; personal files and correspondence; and genealogy research and correspondence relating to the MacDonald and Sutherland families of St. Mary's. Also included are originals and copied b&w photographs and negatives used or considered as part of Florence MacDonald's book "Sherbrooke as I Remember It," published in 1987. Lomas family fonds

Fonds consists of collected research on the history of the Municipality of the District of St. Mary’s from its earliest records, with a special focus on gold mining and Goldenville, Nova Scotia, as well as the personal archives of the Lomas family recording their decades of public service alongside historical material gathered from their families and the community in Sherbrooke, Nova Scotia. The historical research begins with the earliest inhabitants of the Municipality of the District of St. Mary’s, and continues with the arrival of Europeans, reports on the economic development of the area, essays on regional occupations, churches, charitable organizations, schools, government, transportation, communications, energy, banking, health care, recreation, and the war effort in two world wars. It collects research on the communities of Ecum Secum, Marie Joseph, New Chester, The Liscombs, Spanish Ship Bay, Sherbrooke, Sonora, Wine Harbour, Indian Harbour, Port Hilford, Port Bickerton, Harpelville, Fisherman’s Harbour, Jordanville, Stillwater, Waternish, Melrose, Aspen, The Forks, Denver, Glenelg, Smithfield, the Caledonias, Goshen, Argyle, Garden of Eden and the St. Mary’s River. Goldenville, Nova Scotia, is covered extensively with maps, photographs, census reports and other papers. Many histories of the region are collected in this fond, including unpublished memoirs. Papers from the Prince Henry Sinclair Society, St. Mary’s Historical Society, West River Station Restoration Committee, St. Mary’s Anglican Church in Summerside, Prince Edward Island, Sherbrooke Library, Sherbrooke Village, Canso Historical Society, and the Liberal Party of Nova Scotia are also in this fonds, alongside a generous collection of material generated by the Lomas family themselves. There are records from the foreign service of Alton Anderson Lomas in the United States, Mexico, Belgium, and China, as well as his political work in Ontario and Nova Scotia. There is also an extensive record of the community service done by Al and Aleah Lomas, notably her work as librarian at the Sherbrooke Library, and several awards for volunteer service. In addition to the Lomas family material, this fonds holds genealogy research for many local families, notably the McKean/McKeen, Anderson, Henderson, Landesberg, and McLane families. There are photographs of local people and landscapes dating back to the 1870 opening of the first bridge over the St. Mary’s River at Sherbrooke, up to the 2005 wedding reception of Aleah Lomas Anderson and Murray Anderson, with an emphasis on the Anderson, Lomas, Palmer, and MacDonald families. The fonds also has audio and video recordings of interviews, speeches, and brief reports discussing topics of interest to the eastern shore of Nova Scotia. Harold Thorne Stultz fonds

The fonds consist of 262 photographs and a large number of negatives. Harold Thorne Stultz was a scientist with the Dominion Entomology Laboratory in Annapolis Royal from 1935 until 1952, when it was moved to a new location in Kentville, NS. During his time in town in the 1930s and 1940s he created an extensive collection of portrait photographs of area residents. Stultz retired in 1968. 2005.1246
